Newspapers have a rule of thumb that if the headline isn’t interesting, people won’t read the article. We have a somewhat similar rule when it comes to websites, if it takes too long to load, people won’t wait and WILL click elsewhere. So what is too long and how do you check load speeds?

Five seconds? Ten seconds?

Try THREE seconds! According to research by Akamai, posted by Webpagefx.com, 83% of users expect websites to load in three seconds or less!

Mobile users are a bit more forgiving: 64% will give you FOUR seconds before they are off and running to your competition.

We are an impatient lot. Info on demand. Immediate satisfaction. Alexa what do we do?

How can you test your speed?

There is Web Page Test, a free site. But… you may need help understanding the results (full disclosure, as a Digital Plumber, that is one of the things I do).

There is also the very popular Google Analytics performance test process.

So, what causes your site to not be as quick to step up to the plate, so to speak, as your competition?

Things not exactly under your control:

  • Your ISP provider
  • Your browser
  • Your internet connectivity at that moment

Things under your direct control:

  • Images, too many, too large, not optimized
  • Website layout

This is confirmed by Yahoo in article where it stated “80% of the end-user response time is spent on the front-end. Most of this time is tied up in downloading all the components in the page: images, style sheets, scripts, Flash, etc. Reducing the number of components in turn reduces the number of HTTP requests required to render the page. This is the key to faster pages.”

And if the point still hasn’t sunk in that longer loading times = less profits, consider this from the below Infographic: 79% of customers who report dissatisfaction with a website performance are LESS LIKELY TO BUY from that same site again.
